'1000 Miles Away From Home' consists [2009 - 2013] of five snow globes representing the five major oceanic gyres where the circular pattern of currents causes plastic debris to accumulate. Each snow globe is filled with micro plastics, tiny plastic particles collected from the North and South Atlantic, the North and South Pacific and the Indian Ocean over the course of five years. Microplastic is one of the most underestimated global threats to the environment and our own health, so it is preserved here in a universally recognised tourist souvenir – a time capsule for the future. Shaking the globe creates a micro gyre in the water, making the plastic swirl around.
