The exhibition “Streams of Waste” offers a departure point to explore the complex trajectories of waste streams, both physical and digital, and the material, social and environmental impacts that they create. Streams have different degrees of visibility and various positions in public awareness. While plastic trash on city streets catches our eyes, the equivalent of a credit card of microplastics entering our bodies every week is practically unseen. Other streams and sediments of waste are altogether invisible, discarded away from us to ensure continuous consumption. ‘Streams of Waste’ addresses the intended and unintended effects of pollution in the Netherlands and globally. Following the streams of the material and the digital across ecological, societal, and geographical borders, it shows how these streams impact local communities and ecosystems around the world.

WASTELAND Festival is organised by collective.wasteland, an interdisciplinary group committed to tackling the current waste crisis through collaborative efforts. The collective embodies an alternative system based on microsolidarity principles and rotating leadership. WASTELAND, initiated in 2022, reflects a non-hierarchical approach to addressing collective challenges within our society.
